Research Internship Form

Anthropologists use their knowledge to study societal challenges in the Netherlands as well as elsewhere in the world. Anthropology distinguishes itself from other Social Sciences such as Sociology or Governance in its emphasis on specific issues and problems, which are studied with an emphasis on lived reality, and in which much attention is given to the ways in which different people understand situations and contexts, and give these meaning. To create such insights, Anthropologists conduct interviews and analyze policy documents, while they also participate in practice, sensitive to unspoken assumptions and routines, and mutual dependencies.

The one-year Sociology of Policy in Practice Masters programme, a track of the Anthropology Master at Leiden University, trains students to conduct research in which questions that NGOs, policy makers and companies face are central. Students conduct research from January to April. They start drafting a Research Proposal from September onwards, and write their thesis in May and June. So, they work on their research for a year.

The CADS website lists Research Internships available to students.

These Research Internships are not internships in the conventional sense. Students conduct research on challenges faced by organizations, but the organizations involved do not have to offer the students a workplace or an internship allowance. Our students start working based on the request submitted, which serve as a starting point to conduct independent research. Supervision is being done by a teacher of the programme, as far as possible supplemented by someone from within the internship providing organisation. This means that it is not required for the organisation to offer intensive (daily) guidance.

The research conducted can provide organizations with valuable insights into complex challenges they face, and it can also help them to reflect on their functioning, routines or organizational culture. For students, it creates an opportunity to conduct societally relevant research, to gain practical experience and to build up a professional network

Does your organisation face issues or challenges that can benefit from research by a Master student in CADS? If so, please complete this webform.
